Acts 2:1-4 Common English Bible Translation
When Pentecost Day arrived, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound from heaven like the howling of a fierce wind filled the entire house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be individual flames of fire alighting on each one of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them to speak. (Question: When have you felt God’s presence in your life?)
Hymn 291 Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness (In Person Only)
(Second verse)
Acts 2:14-18, 22
Peter stood with the other eleven apostles. He raised his voice and declared, “Judeans and everyone living in Jerusalem! Know this! Listen carefully to my words! These people aren’t drunk, as you suspect; after all, it’s only nine o’clock in the morning! Rather, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young will see visions. Your elders will dream dreams. Even upon my servants, men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. “Fellow Israelites, listen to these words! Jesus the Nazarene was a man whose credential God proved to you through miracles, wonders, and signs, which God performed through him among you. (Question: What are the things that inspire you to change your life?)
Acts 2:36-39
“Therefore, let all Israel know beyond question that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.” When the crowd heard this, they were deeply troubled. They said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?” Peter replied, “Change your hearts and lives. Each of you must be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise is for you, your children, and for all who are far – as many as the Lord our God invites.” (Question: What parts of your life change because you follow Jesus?)
Hymn 291 Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness (In Person Only)
(Fourth verse)
Acts 2:40-43
With many other words he testified to them and encouraged them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation.” Those who accepted Peter’s message were baptized. God brought about three thousand people into the community on that day. The believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the community, to their shared meals, and to their prayers. A sense of awe came over everyone. God performed many wonders and signs through the apostles. (Question: What does it take for you to get excited about your life?)
Hymn 733 We All Are one in Mission (In Person Only)
(First verse)
Acts 2:44-47
All the believers were united and shared everything. They would sell pieces of property and possessions and distribute the proceeds to everyone who needed them. Every day, they met together in the temple and ate in their homes. They shared food with gladness and simplicity. They praised God and demonstrated God’s goodness to everyone. The Lord added daily to the community those who were being saved. (Question: What in your life are you willing to share with others?)
Prayer of Preparation before Communion
Let us quietly reflect on this prayer
Holy Spirit, we are not ready for you, but we know that you are ready for us – ready to change our lives if we will let you. Help us prepare by setting our hearts on fire with love; by blowing away our fears and doubts; by tuning our ears to the rich diversity of language and culture around the world; by opening our eyes to the amazing beauty and power of your creation; by breathing into us the joy and hope of the resurrected Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.

Great Prayer of Thanksgiving
On this day of Pentecost, may the Spirit dance with you!
May the Spirit dance with you as well!
May God’s grace be poured into your hearts.
Come, Holy Spirit, to fill our hearts with love.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil
For thine is the kingdom and the power
and the glory, forever. Amen
